Kandinsky Trees

My Second Grade learned about the Artist Wassily Kandinsky. First, we listened to the Story ‘The Noisy Paint Box’ that I had found on YouTube (See Art Book Videos). I had students draw what they felt while listening to the background music on a blank piece of paper.

To my surprise, as soon as they heard the Artists last name they immediately told me they play an online game in Music class that is called Kandinsky where they draw lines and shapes and it plays different instruments. I wasn’t aware of this game but I love how they made the connection to Art and Music! Double Win!

Second, I had them create an Art project that was centered around trees (which they were learning about in the regular homeroom class).

So I gave each student a white piece of paper with a tree trunk outline and bright colored copy paper. They had to color in the tree trunk using black sharpie then start cutting circles out of the colored copy paper and glue them around the branches.

The circles were meant to be a reflection of Wassily Kandinskys ‘Square with Concentric Circles.’ Like always, I love how the projects turned out!
