For this next project I read my Kindergarten class Black Cat, White Cat by Silvia Borando. It was a great visual to help show them positive and negative space and also contrast. Then following a project example that I found, I had students make a white cat on white construction paper and then place it on black paper. They then did the opposite design on the back site by taking the left over cut piece of white paper and glued it to the back side of the black paper. Students then made faces on both sides using crayons. I then had the students cut a design around the outside edges of the paper.
Update: I do not think I will do this step if I do this project in the end because some of the Kindergartners got a little crazy with the scissors and I feel like it made the overall project look messy. Next time, I will keep a more simple design and leave the edges straight.
